We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Class 8 Truck and Trailer Mechanic to join our maintenance team at a leading construction and paving company at their Ward Lake location. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, preventive maintenance, and repair of our fleet of Class 8 diesel trucks (including dump trucks, water trucks, lowboys, and tractor-trailers) and associated heavy-duty trailers used in asphalt paving, aggregate hauling, and general construction operations. Your work ensures our equipment remains reliable, compliant with DOT regulations, and ready for demanding jobsite conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform complete preventive maintenance (PM) services on Class 8 trucks and trailers according to manufacturer specifications and company schedules, including oil/filter changes, chassis lubrication, brake inspections, and fluid checks.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air systems on heavy- duty diesel trucks and trailers, including engines, transmissions, differentials, suspensions, steering, braking systems (air brakes), and exhaust/emissions components.
- Troubleshoot and repair trailer-specific components such as, electrical lighting/plug systems, air lines, ABS systems, and wheel ends.
- Conduct DOT 90-day inspections, pre-trip/post-trip documentation and inspections to maintain regulatory compliance.
- Perform minor welding/fabrication and structural repairs as needed on, trailerbodies, and attachments.
- Respond to roadside breakdowns or field service calls when required, including mobile repairs at construction/paving sites.
- Maintain accurate service records, repair orders, parts usage, and time logs in our maintenance software system.
- Operate shop equipment, diagnostic tools (including laptop-based software for engine/transmission diagnostics), and company vehicles safely.

Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational training in diesel mechanics preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of verifiable experience as a heavy-duty truck and/or trailer mechanic, with strong focus on Class 8 diesel vehicles (experience in construction, paving, or aggregate hauling environments is a plus).
- Solid knowledge of diesel engines (Cummins, Detroit, Paccar, etc.), air brake systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and trailer chassis/suspension.
- Valid driver's license required; Class A CDL is a plus.
- Familiarity with diagnostic software and tools (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit Diagnostic Link, or equivalent).
- Basic welding and fabrication skills a plus.
- Ability to read schematics, service manuals, and interpret diagnostic results.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to lift 50lbs, bend, kneel, stand for extended periods, and work in varying weather conditions (shop and outdoor/field environments).
- Must have own tools (we will provide specialty tooling).
